The Ugliness and Me

Give me your coldest, darkest winter
Fill it up with rock and snow
Take away my family
Take away all that I know
Bring me a little closer
To that wild place
Where life’s a game that’s seldom won
But we play it every day

You won’t find northern lights in a southern sky, my dear
You’re looking for sun on a rainy day
And I know anything can happen
You proved that more than once
But you’re going about this the wrong way

I’d trade the life of a rich man
Trade that queen-size bed
For standing on some lonely road
With no place to rest my head
I’d rather keep my thumb and heart
Than keep your minivan
There’s no romance in that lifestyle
So careful and planned

You won’t find northern lights in a southern sky, my dear
You’re looking for sun on a rainy day
And I know anything can happen
You proved that more than once
But you’re going about this the wrong way

Well if that don’t work, I’ll climb a tree at sunset
And look o’er the fields of grain
Not to the beauty of a skyline
But to this city all around me
And put some space between the ugliness and me

Well give me a dog and a guitar
Hell, give me a canoe
Throw me a little life or death
Whitewater, that’ll do
Give me something to sing about
Just get me outta here
Life’s so sweet but oh so short
And I won’t be bored to tears

You won’t find northern lights in a southern sky, my dear
You’re looking for sun on a rainy day
And I know anything can happen
You proved that more than once
But you’re going about this the wrong way

Well if that don’t work, I’ll climb a tree at sunset
And look o’er the fields of grain
Not to the beauty of a skyline
But this city all around me
And put some space between the ugliness and me
A little space between the ugliness and me
