West of Winnipeg

“Up on the left you’ll see a moose, you’ll see a moose folks
Made a call last night arranged it special for this coach”
I’m up at dawn or I drive all night
Got a schedule to keep and I keep it very tight

I know these roads inside and out
And I know just what they’ll bring
I’ve got friends in every town I’ve made this trip so many times
I can’t wait to return here each spring

He’s never been west of Winnipeg, never been very far from home
Though he’s seen the Mississippi I suppose
Not just the one in Frontenac
He drives the bus, he’s welcomed back
That welcoming’s the reason that he goes
‘Cause he wouldn’t want to get too far from home

I work all day down on Portage Avenue
I know all the routes and all the drivers passing through
“Here’s your ticket M’am make sure to tag your baggage too”
I was born and raised in Winnipeg; I’ve got a job to do

I know these roads inside and out
And I know just where they lead
Never traveled them myself but I’ve worked ‘em all my life
Winnipeg is all I can see

He’s never been east of Winnipeg, never been very far from home
He’s never been to Ontario
A two hour drive he’s never done
‘Round travelers since he was young
Just sells the tickets watching others go
‘Cause he wouldn’t want to get too far from home

Reaching out from Winnipeg, reaching places far from home
It’s a short life to travel such long roads
A terminal affliction of dodging life or chasing love
What is it that decides where we all go?
What is it keeps us coming back home?
